Incredible aerial footage shows how close wildfires came to the defunct nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine.

Hundreds of firefighters managed to extinguish the flames after 10 days; they were helped by rainfall in recent days.

Before being stopped, forest fires burned over 3,000 hectares in a week, raging through the 30km exclusion zone around the power station.

One of the fires was burning at a distance of just (less than one mile) from the shelter covering the damaged reactor at the nuclear site.

The plant and the nearby town of Pripyat have been abandoned since 1986, when reactor No.4 exploded sending a cloud of radioactive fallout over much of Europe.

The Chernobyl accident is considered the world’s worst nuclear disaster.
